Permissions explained
adblock z asks for as little as possible. Anything extra is optional, off by default, and requested only when you turn on a feature that needs it.
When you install
Your browser shows one warning: "Block content on any page." That's the permission that lets adblock z block ads, which is its whole job. It does not let adblock z read what's on the pages you visit. The other permissions show no warning.
| Permission | Why adblock z needs it |
|---|---|
declarativeNetRequest | Blocking ads and trackers, using the browser's built-in blocking engine. |
storage | Saving your settings, allowlist, custom rules and optional statistics on your device. |
activeTab | Showing the current site's name in the popup, only after you click the adblock z icon. |
alarms | Checking for filter-list updates and, if you turned them on, updating statistics. |
scripting | Hiding leftover ad boxes. It does nothing unless you also allow website access (see below). |
Only if you turn a feature on
These aren't requested at install. When you switch on a feature that needs one, adblock z explains why, then your browser asks you. You can say no, and the rest of adblock z keeps working.
| Feature | What your browser will say | What it's used for |
|---|---|---|
| Statistics | "Read your browsing history" | Asking the browser which adblock z rules matched, to count blocked items per day. Nothing about the sites is stored. Turning statistics off removes the permission. |
| Element hiding, link cleaning, Global Privacy Control | "Read and change all your data on all websites" | Adding hiding styles to pages, removing tracking tags from links, and sending the "do not sell or share" signal. adblock z does not read page content. |
| Extra filter lists | "Read and change your data on [list website]" | Downloading the one filter list you chose, from that website only. |
Never requested
adblock z never asks for access to your tabs list, full browsing history, cookies, downloads, or permission to watch every network request. If you remove a permission in your browser's extension settings, adblock z notices and switches the matching feature off.
